Lab 1 - Natural Selection in the Goldenrod Gall Fly System: Effects of Predators and Parasites Week 1: What is natural selection and how can we measure it?

چکیده

Objectives: • Understand the concepts of natural selection, heritable variation, and selection pressures • Become familiar with the experimental system in which we will measure natural selection (read this lab and the Natural History article “Just Lookin’ for a Home” which is posted on Blackboard before you come to lab). • Develop testable hypotheses regarding natural selection in the goldenrod-gall fly system • Determine the environmental and physical parameters necessary to effectively evaluate hypotheses • Collect galls and information on environmental variables in the field • Measure gall sizes and record their contents in the laboratory, and prepare to analyze data next week

Goldenrod Gall Flies on Sharkey Site: If You Build it They Will Come

Restoration of ecological function to abandoned agricultural fields managed for forested ecosystems through afforestation can be measured in various ways. One underutilized method is to chart the progress of known predator-prey-parasitoid systems, and assess the development toward equilibrium of these systems across the forest restoration site. We study the development of the balancing selectio...

Location Selection and Resource Allocation for Field Hospitals after a Possible Earthquake in Amol City, Iran

Background and objective Transferring injured people to medical centers is one of the important challenges of providing relief in natural and man-made disasters. Often, due to the damage caused by the disaster, it is not possible to transfer the injured to safe medical centers in the short term. Establishing field hospitals in suitable places is one of the common solutions in these situations. ...

A geographic mosaic of trophic interactions and selection: trees, aphids and birds.

Genetic variation in plants is known to influence arthropod assemblages and species interactions. However, these influences may be contingent upon local environmental conditions. Here, we examine how plant genotype-based trophic interactions and patterns of natural selection change across environments. Studying the cottonwood tree, Populus angustifolia, the galling aphid, Pemphigus betae and it...

An integrated environmental management approach to industrial site selection by genetic algorithm and fuzzy analytic hierarchy process in geographical information system

Environmental planning and management can have positive effects on development of some land uses including industrial areas that have a major effect on economic, social and environmental conditions. Considering the most important problems associated with modeling, the fundamental methods and functions of site-selection laid inside the geographical information system are not accounted for the mu...

Altruistic Colony Defense by Menopausal Female Insects

Recent studies have suggested that an extended postreproductive life span, such as life after menopause in human females, will evolve when the indirect (kin-selected) fitness benefits from altruistic behavior are greater than the direct fitness benefits from continuing reproduction. Under some conditions in which postreproductive altruism is more beneficial and/or continuing reproduction is mor...
